Digital Tools

As said in the infopage, in the last decade of the previous century the writer is more and more concentrated on the graphic sides of the computer. The ever expanding possibilities of this tool makes it possible to add almost unlimited layers and transparencies to digital paintings. The writer starts using applications like Photoshop, Illustrator, PaintShop Pro and 3D Studio Max. The main thought is though to design and perfect an idea on the computer and then to use this as a beginning for a painting.

Although since the writer got sight of Open Source Software he is inclined to start using these applications. From around 2014 he is creating his pictures more and more in GIMP. Another stream of digitalised pictures is created on the mobile phone. More and more applications supporting layers and transparancy like PhotoEditor and PhotoEditorUltimate come available. A major drawback of these apps however is the low resolution of the created pictures. So the pictures have to be imported in GIMP to change resolution and format, since most designs are eventually sized to an average of 80x50 cm and then printed.

Since the release of the Dutch-made 3D-program Blender 2.8x late 2019 another wonderful tool creates great possibilities to create new digital paintings. Blender is a tool to create 3-dimensional pictures and even animations or movies. Though it takes quite some efforts and time to master the program it already gives promising results and is indeed a challenge for a creative mind.

Digitaal Gereedschap

Zoals al vermeld op de infopagina, heeft schrijver dezes zich in het laatste decennium van de vorige eeuw meer en meer geconcentreerd op de grafische ontwikkelingen van de computer. De zich voortdurend uitbreidende mogelijkheden om lagen toe te voegen in verschillende gradaties van transparantie sluit precies aan bij zijn ontwikkeling als schilder op zoek naar nieuwe wegen. Hij begint met fotobewerkingsprogramma's als Photoshop, Illustrator, CoralDraw en PaintShopPro, later komt er 3D vormgeving bij met 3D Studio Max. Toch blijft nog steeds het uitgangspunt: eerst het ontwerp op de computer maken en vervolmaken en vervolgens dit idee uitwerken op het paneel.

Maar sinds schrijver (grafische) Open Source Software heeft ontdekt maakt hij toenemend gebruik van de mogelijkheden van deze programma's. Vanaf 2014 maakt hij meer en meer gebruik van GIMP fotobewerkingsoftware. Een andere ontwikkeling is het gebruik van applicaties op de mobiele telefoon. Apps als PhotoEditor en PhotoEditorUltimate maken het werken met lagen en transparanties mogelijk. Het probleem met deze apps is echter de lage resolutie, dit is alleen geschikt voor beeldschermen. De afbeeldingen dienen dus geïmporteerd te worden in GIMP om de resolutie naar printformaat te verhogen om vervolgens geprint te worden, doorgaans in een formaat van ca. 80x50 cm.

Sinds het uitkomen eind 2019 van de nieuwste versie van het Nederlandse 3D-programma Blender is er een wondermooi pakket bij gekomen met veel gereedschappen om digitale schilderijen te ontwerpen. Blender is een 3D programma waar zowel afbeeldingen als animaties of films mee gemaakt kunnen worden. Alhoewel het veel tijd en inspanning kost om het programma onder de knie te krijgen is het voor een creatieve geest de moeite waard om de uitdaging aan te gaan.
